The
Language Training and Testing Center (the LTTC) came into being in
1951. Thirty-five years later in February 1986, it was registered with
the Ministry of Education as a cultural and educational foundation.
Since the outset, it has offered language teaching, training and
testing in order to meet the needs of social and economical
development in Taiwan.
Currently, the LTTC provides classes in English, Japanese, French,
German, and Spanish. The school serves a broad cross-section of
society, providing training for business people, college and
university students, and other adult members of society. The LTTC is
also an accepted language learning institute for civil service
employees.
In
February 2002, the Taipei City Department of Education approved the
LTTC to open an independent branch, the LTTC Language Institute
(LTTC-LI). The new branch is located at Zhongxiao E. Rd., Sec. 1, No.
31, 4F.
Courses at the LTTC-LI begin every January, April, July, and October,
and each of the four terms last for ten weeks. Most courses run from
Monday to Friday. Depending on the kind of course, these last for
either one, two or three hours a day. Saturday courses, which are
generally three hours a day, are also offered. In addition, there are
short-term classes and other types of courses which are available on
demand.
Areas
of instruction covered include listening, reading, conversation,
writing, news, business, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The
variety of types of courses and times at which classes are held meet a
wide range of needs, with the exception of exam preparation. Students
are placed into classes appropriate to their ability. Those who wish
to study Japanese, French, German, or Spanish can start at beginnersˇ¦
level, and they do not need to sit a placement test. All classes are
limited to eight to eighteen people. The schoolˇ¦s experienced local
and foreign teachers use communicative and interactive teaching
methods in order to provide students with the opportunity to practice
everyday usage and to further intercultural understanding.
All
of the classrooms are fitted out with various electronic devices, such
as computers, DVD players and digital projectors that are often used
to assist the instructional process. Online courses are also offered.
In addition, the school is working on different kinds of teaching
research projects as well as course and textbook development. From
time to time, workshops and cultural lectures are held in order to
improve teaching and service quality.
